Introduction
Many times our understanding of dance and movement is something performative and therefore it seems to be unreachable, for those who havent danced before. Either you can dance or not, and if not, then it seems intimidating to start. But why is it intimidating and what does it have to do with the own perception of ourselves?
Intimidating and self-love
To feel intimidated by someone has it´s roots in admiration. Something we actually want, but are not ready to do it (yet). As a dancer I feel the looks and the energy shifting, once I start dancing- eventho in common spaces I adjust the expression on the enviroment and of course I wouldn´t dance with 100% expression, rather then have a little groove and move. But eventhough it´s "just" that, I can feel how it´s intimidating others, and some told me even so. Not because I want to, but because I trigger something in others, they haven´nt open up to it (yet) for themselves.
Dance and Movement needs a lot of confidence and embracement, since we are moving within a culture- in the west- that doesn´t have a big dance culture. Different then other cultures, such as my own personal roots in Kosovo/ Albania, as well as my ancient roots from africa. Yes we all come from Africa and black culture is world known for their magnificant and wide spreaded dance and music culture. If we scroll back, not only in our common human history, but scroll back into ourselves, we will find the connection to music and dance. Sometimes not so present, as perhaps in myself, but surely everyone is liked to vibration on a quantum physical level, regardlessly of intrinsic desire for movement and music. With dance and moving, we are connecting back to our ancient tribes, and ancient cultures to practise something spiritually. Music and dance is always a spiritual thing, because to make music and to dance, you have to believe, that you can do it! There you start to believe into something within yourself. In spirituality we believe that everyone and everything is part of one- god or god´s energy and since we are one part of it. Not like in Religions, where God is outside yourself. Spirituality comes within and the believe that God lives within us and that believe enables us to take actions. Actions to move and actions to be part of life.
You have to open up to play with the unknown, in order to become. Most people who practise music and dance, had already intrinsic desires of doing so from early age, but even if not, there is the connection to music and dance on a universal level: the law of vibration and formation, the attraction and the communication on an energy level. This is when we arrive in quantum phsysics. In the Universe, everything is moving, everything is constantly changing. Nothing that is now, will ever be again. We have to remember this, because without moving, we will die. Stagnation is the result of death. If we dont move, then something is dying. If we dont move our bodys, we are not releasing tension, that we created in our minds, but get stored in our bodys. This will cause automatically pain, suffer and diseases. Also it will age you by far faster!
So let´s come back to the intimidation, because if someone intimidates you, then there is the direct link to the lack of your own practise. You want something, you dont have (yet) = admiration. You actually want it, but dont have it (now). On a spiritual level, this can cause harm to others, eventhough we are not aware of it, or we don´t intent to harm others. In many religious and spiritual beliefs, there is the "evil eye", which causes harm to others, if you don´t bless at the same time the person that you admire. You can bless yourself btw., when you feel that others are admiring you, but dont tell you. We live in a culture of haters and jelousy, rooted in capitalist´s mindest of competition. Of course competition doesnt make sense in it´s root and is evil per se. Nothing that is unique, can be compared, and apperently we all are unique in human history! It seems we just keep forgetting this magnificant fact. Of course no one tells you this in a society, build on colonialism and capitalism. Of course we are not teached to accept ourselves and love ourselves the way we just are, because then we wouldn´t consume all these products! Of course we are meant to hate first, gossip first and constant compare and compete with each other. We are so easy to say what we hate, but it seems so hard to say whom and what we love. Especially about ourselves. This is the root of division, because we are only strong, if we stand firm as an individual (self-love)supporting the unity (next-love). Essential for unity is self-love! How can we darely love someone, truely support someone else and purely bless someone, if you don´t love yourself in first place? Simply you can´t! If we are kind to ourselves, if we truely love ourselves with all the blessings each of us has as a unique compesition of magic (life itself), then we could not go outside and harm others. Perhaps we would understand that others, suffer for their own reasons, we would perhaps understand that others, are not even others, they are another version of yourself. When we understand this, we arrive in the philosophy of spirituality.
Yet we are programmed in the colonizer and capitalist mindset, which divides, then unites: "I take, so I have more- and thats how I win over others!" "I am better then others..!" Not only is this lack of grace as a mentality, but it leads directly to our death. Humans are social creatures and we can only survive through creating and working together.
Let´s go back to ancient tribes, where we practise: "I love myself and you are part of my life, so therefore I love you- regardlessly of who you are and what you do or did, because I forgive you, as I forgive myself." I want to give you what I know, and I want to learn from you what I admire about you, so my admiration comes back to myself, as a seed of yours, to fill my lack and grow together. This means to become one. Your wisdom and knowledge, becomes mine and mine becomes yours, so we become more of each other. This is the level of deep spiritual connection.
This is the mindset of truth and growth, as well as the mindset of Hip Hop Dance culture (nothing you ever learned on the TV about Hip Hop). We teach each other, with open admiration, with blessings and then we grow together. We wont grow together, if we just give each other evil eyes, for our own lack. A lack is there to be filled with whats needed, and if we haven´t found the filling within ourselves, then it must be outside of ourselves. We will perhaps find it through others, but we need to be open, to receive. To believe we don´t need each other to grow, is the stagnation of information and therefore a direct link to death. To find- and actually feel the own personal lack, shouldn´t be stigmatized into something negative, rather then something to exlpore more. A desire to grow! Self-love is ulimately linked to the believe that you can do it and it´s linked to our actions. If you believe you matter and you can make a change, that´s when you start acting as you matter, and then you will matter! Maybe you won´t be "good" as the other person, most likely it will take a lot of time and dedication, because no tree grows in a day, but to notice admiration, to love yourself for your founded lack and to love the other for the possible filling. To be open to receive the other with love, means you have been rooting yourself in love. No ego play, no competition, just the other and a space together to embrace. Complementation of information means to unify on a divine level.
Ultimately we can say that dance and movement is the ultimate soul, body and mind embracement, and definitely a spiritual resistance to status quo, which is devision, competition and taking. Dance and movement means to learn to give, to share in order to grow and ultimately to unify. That´s why dance, movement and music are ulitmately tools of healing. Healing a mindset, that have been hurting us collectively for too long in our souls.
